Ten year old Ella Jany was named Halton County champion in a public speaking contest at Milton high school auditorium. Judges praised her clear delivery as contestants from four townships presented impromptu stories and a prepared speech about a trip to Canada from Hungary. Ontario finals follow at the Royal York in Toronto on April 6 during Easter week.

Farm blaze destroys home and poultry
A fire at Walter Lewandowski’s farm near Acton burned a house to the ground and killed 200 two and a half week old chicks stored in the brooder. Sparks reached a nearby shed and house but did not ignite them. water from a farm pond and a pumper fought the flames. Neighbor Dalton Barber reported the alarm shortly before midnight.

Campbellville Woman Injured In Guelph Road Crash
Mrs. Emily Hayden of Campbellville suffered abrasions, lacerations and bruised ribs when her car ran off Guelph Road five miles north of Campbellville, rolled over after striking a bank. She was rushed to Guelph General Hospital. the 1952 Chevrolet had about $1,000 damage. OPP Const. Gunn investigated.

Nassagaweya Township mourns as William Mathias Van Sickle dies at Wellesley hospital after a yearlong illness. William H Mainprize, born March 3 1857 in Huron County, marked his 96th birthday in Acton where he has lived about 40 years. A Bearmore Co engineer for 33 years, he recalls Acton in 1911 with municipal hydro power and few industries, noting long 59 hour weeks and wages from 15 to 30 cents per hour. New wishes came from town and district residents and the Free Press.
