Kelley wins Acton Minute Man Road Race title

Arlington florist John Kelley won the first Acton Minute Man Road Race from Arlington to Acton in 1 hour 29 minutes 5% seconds. Bill McMahon and Labonte followed, with Clarence DeMar arriving late and finishing 28th.

Euphemia Hall Dies in Maynard at 64

Miss Euphemia Hall died Friday afternoon at her sister Mrs Howard Case 36 Great Road Maynard. Born in Scotland she had lived in Maynard for 34 years and was a member of the Maynard Woman's Club. Funeral services were held Monday at two o'clock at her sister's home conducted by Rev Matthew A Vance with burial in Glenwood Cemetery.

Officials Honored at New England Water Works Convention

Maynard William Naylor superintendent of the water department was among 16 Massachusetts officials honored in Providence for 25 years of service to their communities and association. Naylor also served as sewer superintendent since April 1934 and received a certificate of merit.

Taps Nevala Finishes 16th in Acton Minute Man Road Race

Maynard Thomas Nevala of Kanto A.C. finished 16th in the Acton Minute Man road race earning the Henry Tolman trophy for local top finisher. The 32 year old racer, who has trained himself for fun, also placed sixth at Fort Pong this year and previously quit the 1934 BALA marathon after about 71 miles due to heat and blisters. He plans to keep training for future distant road events.

Bedford Girl Celebrates 13th Birthday Party

Margaret Sullivan of John Street hosted a Saturday evening party for her 13th birthday. A group of boys and girls gathered at her home played games and watched movies then moved to the dining room where a large birthday cake sat at the center. Ice cream cake and other goodies followed gift opening.

Three Fined for Defeating Veteran at Bedford Hospital

BedfordHarold L Churches 29 of Lowell James B Smith 39 of Dayton Ohio and Frank Hayes 39 of Needham were fined 25 dollars each in Concord District Court Saturday morning after being found guilty of defeating a patient at the U S Veterans hospital in Bedford. All three were discharged as hospital attendants by Dr W Adams.

Sudbury Farmer Nesta Manty Hangs Self Over Boundary Dispute

Sudbury Sept 24 Nesta Manty 60 a farmer of Iron Works road North Sudbury was found dead by his own hand hanging from a wire stretched between boundary posts. Neighbors quarrel over property lines and his wife’s illness are cited as factors. Manty leaves a wife a son in New York and a daughter in St Johnsbury Vermont. He had been despondent for some time.

Abraham Rubin dies after long illness Harriman resident 67

Maynard Abraham Rubin of Harriman dies after several months illness at age 67. Born in Russia he lived in town many years and is survived by a wife two sons and two daughters. Funeral services were held at the Jewish synagogue on Acton street and burial followed at Mont Vale cemetery in Malden.

A surprise shower was hosted for Miss Edith B. Falcucci at the home of her fiancé Angelo Taran in Waltham on Monday night. The couple is to wed at St Brigid's Church on October 12 with a social program of gates dancing music and refreshments.

Plan Project for Canning Marlboro

A proposed plan uses Maynard canning facilities to preserve Maynard area cans of fruit and vegetables under WPA funding. WPA provides the fruit and vegetables while Maynard workers perform the canning work for sixteen people, mainly experienced women. The product will be distributed by the Federal WPA. Work begins on Alumni field skating and hockey rink. Property owners are urged to file sidewalk project applications, with over twenty already submitting to ERA administrator James A. Coughlan for prompt approval.

A Purple Heart, the U S government citation for wounds in action, was awarded to Thomas J. Smith. The presentation occurred at a Frank J. Dears Post AL meeting chaired by Arley Lawrence. Memorial Service for W. D. Cross in Concord Parish House

Concord town officers and citizens gathered in the First Parish Meeting House to honor Willam O Cross a twenty year Town Clerk and fifty year member. Rev Edward Perry Daniels led the service reading scripture and praising Mr Cross for his integrity and conscience. Organist Miss Angie M Faunce provided music as mourners heard the biblical tribute.

Engagement of Miss Gladys Graham Announced

Mr and Mrs William I J Graham announce the engagement of their daughter Miss Gladys Frances Graham to Charles O Hincock of Glover Vermont and Waltham. The wedding is planned for early November.
