California’s romance origins to statehood rise in history
Jonathan Brace traces California’s name from romance to reality. Spanish explorers named Alta California after a fictional island, followed by missions and Mexican-era independence. The 1848 peace set US territory, gold rush spurred growth, and 1850 made California the 31st state with 158,297 square miles and thirteen presidential electors.
