A late 19th century column denounces Republican tariff policy, sugar bounty repeal, and party corruption. It comments on editor Van Meter family, Morton gubernatorial bid, and New York railroad liability reform. The piece critiques pensions for labor, price shifts after tariffs, and cites editorials from Chicago and Boston papers.
Fragmentary items claim the last Republican administration triggered a panic by pushy prophesy and policy. They accuse McKinley and others of bungled management, leading to bankruptcy for some, with remarks tying the downturn to democratic policies and political prophecy. Also notes Amelia Bloomer’s residence in Council Bluffs and scattered local tidbits from Iowa and beyond.
Reports from Ackley and Eldora recount violent family crises and bizarre rumors surrounding Taylor and his wife. Also noted are a man killed by a self inflicted wound near N.G. Kenniston’s woods, inquest finding suicide, and community notes from council meetings, marriages, and local business chatter across nearby counties.
Two Marshalltown citizens died within a week by their own hand. On Friday September 14, Mr. Up son took morphine to end his life, closely followed by Henry Eusminger on Tuesday the 18th after a period of illness and despondency. Mrs. Upson, wife of the deceased, is Dr. Upson, longtime secretary of the State Pharmaceutical association, now residing in Milwaukee. In related notices, Leonard and other local notices discuss excursion tickets to St. Louis and business changes at Frudden Lumber Co, Ackley water company incorporation, and new furniture dealer John Oilers in Ackley Iowa.
