Seven Negroes Slain as Miners Clash in Carterville
Carterville Illinois September 18 Soldiers patrol town and guard mine property after a deadly clash between union miners and African American workers. Seven black miners were killed and two wounded in a mid day battle on the principal street. Authorities fear further violence as white and black factions vow reprisals and state troops restore order. The dead include T J Floyd Sim Cummings Huey Bradley William Prentiss John Black and two unnamed men.

Pittsfield Mass September 18 A second operation was performed on Anson Phelps Stokes who was injured in a mid August riding accident on his Lenox estate and lost a limb. The amputation was initially successful but the wound did not heal as expected and a further operation followed. Only Mrs Stokes has been granted access to the patient who has remained under constant care since the incident.
