In Milwaukee on September 14 Edward Phelps escaped a Riverside sanitarium attendant and threw himself in front of a moving trolley car. He was cut to pieces and fatally killed. Authorities investigate the incident.
Public filing shows Standard Oil Company of New Jersey earned about 490 million dollars in eight years from 1899 to 1906 with dividends totaling 308 million. Assets rose from about 201 million to 672 million. The report notes 9,990 shares in Standard Oil of Indiana and mentions a Chicago court fine against the Indiana unit.

The Lusitania, Cunard's giant turbine liner, arrives in New York establishing a new Europe to New York voyage record. The maiden run covers 2782 miles in five days and six and a half hours with an average speed of 23.01 knots per hour, surpassing prior time marks while echoing historic speeds of Kaiser Wilhelm II and Deutschland.
Miss Kate Lyon, 55, of Warren Pennsylvania, travels toward Buffalo North Carolina claiming kinship with strangers at farmhouses near Iowa City. She holds nearly 4000 in cash and papers, is not violent, and is jailed awaiting word from Warren or Buffalo on her claimed relatives. Sheriff Rowland arrested her at 2 am after she refused to leave a residence near Iowa City.
Lonnie Ferris a cowboy shot Jesse Wallace near the J A cattle ranch in Brushie Meade county after a long cattle range dispute. Wallace died from two shots in the back and three more shots followed as Anderson sought help. Ferris is at large as sheriff and coroner investigate.
Des Moines September 14 Application by American Linseed Oil Co for an injunction against the Iowa food and dairy commissioner to stop enforcement of the pure food law against the company. It alleges the 10 cent inspection fee is a license tax on interstate business and favors grains and state products. The filing seeks relief on constitutional grounds. The case centers on the legality and reach of state inspection charges.

Secretary of War William H. Taft sailed at 1 o'clock on the steamship Minnesota for the Orient. He appeared in fine spirits, chatted with his party, and was greeted by a large crowd from the darks. O'Brien ambassador to Japan, and Peter Augustus Jay, first secretary of the embassy, with other officials and press representatives.
