Treasury Report Summary of the United States Notes and Gold Reserve
The United States Treasurer submitted Secretary Carlisle a yearly report summarizing receipts and expenditures. Total ordinary revenues rose slightly, with expenditures down from the prior year. At year end 1893 the treasury balance stood around 4.7 million with further liabilities bringing total to about 7.7 million. Gold and silver assets grew due to revenue, with net gold proceeds near 1.5 million and a reserve increase from 903 million to 100.5 million. Treasury notes began retirement in gold, and cumulative gold redemptions reached 66.6 million for notes redeemed since specie payments ended. Paper currency in circulation peaked in May and then contracted as redemptions and gold certificate retirements rose. The Columbian Exposition expenses were funded from treasury instruments, and counterfeits in circulation rose slightly during the year.
