In Elgin business writing Col W B McClung argues that cost fear hinders road progress. Expenditures should favor permanent, well drained roadbeds with proper underdraining and drainage, then macadam coating. Prioritize quality and lasting infrastructure over yearly waste and debt.
A New York subscriber seeks a cistern fifteen feet across capable of holding running water all winter. Professor Walter Flint of Maine Agricultural College states only a tight cover with running water prevents freezing, since frost will damage cement or even a boiler iron tank.
The summer drought creates opportunities to stockpile road dust for winter use in poultry houses. Keeping dirt doors closed helps cleanliness, odor control, and may be repurposed for litter and scraping. The text notes practical cleaning benefits and potential misuses in fruit handling.
The article describes a model dairy house sized for twelve cows with space and arrangement as key features. It details a roomy stable, four foot long stalls and feeding boxes, a floor depth from manger to gutter of five feet, and a V shaped partition to prevent feed spillage while allowing cow access.
A detailed plan for a dairy building includes an 18 inch wide feed fitter, a through passage for wagon delivery, sloping platforms, and a silo opening into the feedroom. It describes a rear calf stable, multiple doors for access, abundant safety features, a substantial feedroom, and partitions for cow safety. It also outlines a twelve cow plan with two apartments for a cold-setting room and a butter storage area, plus a burning room and butter staging, with water drainage to pig-pens and washing sinks. The dairy floor should be painted and heated by base burning stove or steam, and facilities like an ice closet, separator wing, and an untire for butter packages are noted.
In heavy travel, gravel fails as a road building material due to higher long term repairs. Broken stone roads share the same core principles since Macadam’s time, using modern machinery for faster, better results. Proper foundations, four to four and a half inch stone layers, careful rolling, and filling with screenings yields smooth, durable surfaces. The fall mower will kill weeds on fields suitable for use, allowing weed control without harming young flora.
Press opinions from Democratic journals fault the GOP, blame internal party divisions and Washington missteps under Grover Cleveland, and warn of a needed reorganization to restore strength. Editorials from Chicago and Louisville outlets frame the 1894 losses as the result of infighting, policy missteps, and a disheartened base.
An old ad praises the Chicago to St Paul and Minneapolis and Chicago to Omaha routes aboard luxurious equipment. It notes warm vestibule apartments, reliable schedules, and small bills accepted for passage. A quoted exchange hints at a dramatic death in a separate fragment.
Two menagerits arrive in Bologna one under Signor B and the other under his wits. They join forces and open a travel notice announcing livestock, railroad connections, and through sleeping car service from Chicago to multiple western and southern cities. The item includes railway names, routes, and contact notes for timetable details.
An advertisement extols Syrup of Figs as a pure, agreeable laxative that cleanses the system, dispels fevers and headaches, and improves health. It claims wide medical approval, targets the liver and bowels, and emphasizes that only California Fig Syrup Co manufactures it, urging buyers to avoid substitutes.
A collage of eccentric quotes and short notices appears, featuring playful banter about prizes and youth, along with scattered product pitches for health bitters and remedies. It includes theater ads, travel notices, and stray snippets from various sources, reflecting a bygone newspaper page segment.
