Sankey the Singer and the Ninety and Nine Hymn
The Brooklyn hymn writer Ira D. Sankey died recently. His career with Moody included the Edinburgh episode that birthed The Ninety and Nine. He recalled how a clipping from a newspaper inspired the tune and sermon led by Moody that day. Sankey’s life story covers his boyhood in Edinburg Pennsylvania, Civil War service, and long evangelistic work with Moody in Chicago London and Geneva. He often performed with a portable organ and touched individual listeners to reach many.
