Marshalltown May 23 Reflector reports speculation over failure to reorganize the soldiers' home board and election of a new commandant. Many believe current officials will be replaced in August while others suspect shift to aid candidate L B Raymond. Rumors name possible president Lt Godefrey and changes to commandant and quartermaster. local merchants note need for reform amid perceived favoritism and discipline issues. District court session continues and crops struggle with earlier rains as farmers replant corn and expect price gains. The Iowa Central Railway yard improvements draw buyer complaints. Union memorial services held. Germans plan a $3,000 shared building with funds mostly raised.
A Burlington fire destroyed the Ray Plow Works on Saturday afternoon and spread to nearby dwellings. One house burned to the ground, three more partially destroyed, plus three barns and several outbuildings. All houses within two blocks suffered damage. The blaze began in the roof from a spark from an engine. Losses were about $17,000 for the works with $3,500 insured. dwellings totaled about $5,006 with no insurance.
Mt Pleasant voters face a special election June 7 1897 with three propositions. 1 whether to establish an electric light plant and equipment in the city, 2 whether to authorize purchase of the Mt Pleasant Gas and Electric Light plant for 8281.25, 3 whether to pay 750 to the present company as damages if purchase occurs. Polls open 8am to 6pm with ward polling places. Registration sessions set for June 5 and election day.
Eldora May 25 A major real estate transfer occurred when W S Porter purchased the Eldora Mleetyi Light company plant for 2500. The deal includes a heating plant supplying heat to principal business houses. The plant, valued at about 40000 when built, is regarded as one of the state's best.
Primghar reports a shooting incident after a Wells boy and his brother attempted to move corn from land rented by R. R. Wells. H. C. Smith’s son fired a 22 rifle, striking a Wells boy who is feared not to recover. Smith said he believed the Wells boy, a tramp, was stealing corn. The town buzzes over the case.
Bedford citizens William Clarke and Attorney W. B. Leonard exchanged violence in Creston on May 25. Clarke allegedly assaulted Leonard on the streets, part of an old score that also involved a prior horsewhipping by Mrs. Hunt and subsequent actions by Clarke's brother. Citizens speculate on who will be next.
Supreme court issued opinions in several cases including Winch versus Garrett affirmed, Hatcher versus Dunn reversed, Helns versus Wieke reversed, Gentnett against Marion affirmed, Verset against Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railway affirmed, RicDonald versus Basom affirmed, Pioneer Implement versus Sterling Manufacturing affirmed.
The eighty third anniversary of the American Baptist Missionary Union opened in Pittsburg with Rev. Henry F. Colby presiding. The treasurer reported receipts of 407101, including 258298 donations and 44740 legacies. Expenditures for 1896 97 stood at 580895, with 494537 for missions and 25000 plus for officers and agencies. A Cuba bound admittance spoke against retrenchment, urging consecration before accepting funds, prompting mixed reactions before adjourning without action.
Pittsburg May 25 A heated session of the general synod discussed tobacco use among students for ministry training. Dr Steele of Philadelphia defended tobacco while several delegates opposed. the matter was referred. Also presented were foreign missions and Sunday schools reports. adjournment followed.
Des Moines May 24 Adjutant General Wright has shifted from opposition to endorsement of sending four Iowa guard regiments to the Omaha exposition next summer. Plans by expo authorities call for maneuvers with guards and irregulars from nearby states, an event that could attract thousands. Wright cites Governor Drake’s favor and notes canvas capacity as the main hurdle. The trip would replace the regular annual encampment and last one week.
Des Moines May 24 executive council named the Iowa commission to oversee state interests at the Omaha exposition. Members span districts and parties with John H. Walbvank and Owen Lovejoy among listed officials. Also reported are a missing bank cashier case and Supreme Court decisions handed down this morning in Des Moines.
May 22 near Thompson a buggy broke its neckyoke strap causing a runaway. Mrs An drew Haugen, 60, tried to jump but was dragged by her dress and died two hours later. Also Hollsman and J Harris were thrown from a buggy with likely fatal injuries. Cedar Tidups reports a woman, Mrs John Casper, hanged herself in the parlor after a period of partial insanity.
Indictment returns in a federal case involving a physician and Medical Journal links to alleged mail matter. The doctor, a faculty member at a college in the Indies region, faced institutional disapproval over treatment of women students. Read fragments indicate tuition and alleged threats as walls bore writings. Parties reportedly sought out-of-court settlement.
Henry Ewing a prominent Burlington citizen and president of the State Phuiishers' Association died Saturday at age 70. He helped build the Chicago Burlington and Quincy railway in Burlington.
Des Moines May 16 The supreme court holds that railroad commissioners rates are prima facie reasonable. If evidence proves unreasonableness the shipper may recover excess and triple damages. Barris Co sued for rate difference after a 1898 hearing set a lower rate. court below favored the railroad. supreme court reverses.

Des Moines May 26 Governor Boies refuses to be a candidate for the next term of governor stating personal reasons prevent acceptance of the nomination. He notes public sentiment should crystallize and rejects fusion ticket hopes despite compliments from supporters. The letter dated Waterloo May 22, 1897 is released.
Nesden Des Moines May 23 The past week showed variable weather with above normal first half temperatures and unsettled latter half approaching frost. Local showers on the 19th and 20th occurred in central and northern districts with below normal rainfall overall. Plowing and planting progress varies by conditions. early planted corn is good and cultivation underway though some replanting may be needed due to wet soil. oats and spring wheat show some injury from soil crusting. warm rains are needed for grain and pasture in some areas. fruit crops including cherries currants apples and berries appear to be doing well.
George Chain of Marlborough, Ohio, reportedly registered under an assumed name and ended his life at Highland Inn. A note left behind said he was in trouble. The fragmentary report also notes a trolley collision elsewhere with injuries to several people.
