Burglars blew open the Chicago Great Western depot safe at Cedar Falls last September, stealing cash, a check, and valuable papers. A farmer named Oldrich later found a buried box containing the missing papers, easing the agent’s inconvenience as the robbers likely abandoned the load.
Ottumwa May 11 Governor Drake will pardon Amelia Darby Evans who is serving a fifteen year sentence for the murder of her betrayer Thomas Lloyd at Keb near this city in 1893. She is dying of consumption and the warden physician and Judge Babb who sentenced her have recommended clemency. The petition circulated by her mother has many signatures. Her husband, who aided the crime, was sentenced to life.
Congressman Jen Anderson of Dubuque leaves for Washington after recovery from illness. His leg requires another amputation, but the operation will await arrival in the capital.
An appellate court in Chicago affirmed the $10,000 judgment held by Lucia B. Griffin, who was injured in Madison, Wisconsin when a heavy door in the Illinois Central baggage room fell, trapping her. The case was pursued against the Illinois Central railroad. The report also notes other state legislative actions as unrelated context.

May 12 report from Oskaloosa details Eq Turner, a blacksmith and gang member, assaulting Cage Hartgraves with a blunt instrument causing a two inch cut on the left temple and a knife or razor cut on the chin. Hartgraves fell as Turner jumped on him after a head blow. The drunken dispute over a imagined wrong sparked the fight. Turner previously bit off half an ear of another victim and was released on a $75 bond.
In Clinton on May 12 about forty camps of the Modern Woodmen of America convened to hear a six week old committee report. The document censures head officers for extravagance lax management and alleged prior knowledge of a $45,000 shortage by the former head banker Ink. The report, adopted in full, caused a sensation among attendees.
May 12 in Bunker Allison’s yard a three year old son of Dr. William Massey died in a playhouse accident. The child climbed a stone near the structure to look inside, slipped, and became caught between roof boards, resulting in death. The body was found cold and lifeless.

He joined the free silver party after nomination and grew despondent, leading to treatment at the state institution.
New York May 13 A Herald Washington special says the sugar schedule of the tariff bill is doomed to defeat. The senate stands 47 to 9 against, excluding absent or unclassified votes. Practically the solid Democratic and Populist bloc will oppose it, with several Republicans noncommittal or unclassified also expected to vote against the schedule.
Grad Forks North Dakota May 13 August Normand who cut the throats of Knute Hilstad's children on May 2 two of whom died instantly was captured twelve miles southwest of Towner yesterday by ranchman Charles Thruen. Normand ate breakfast at Gamelius camp then surrendered to Thruen who tied him to a saddle and took him to Towner. He claimed to be August Normand and said an impulse compelled the crime. He expressed remorse and predicted he would die. A large posse will bring him to town with possible mob action feared at Larimore and Devil's Lake. Sheriff Connor and Chief Ityan pursue westward.
Four year old George Green of Niles Michigan fell seventy five feet from a third story hotel window. He struck ground and climbed three flights uninjured except for a slight skin abrasion on one leg. Relatives feared death but found him alert and walking to meet them.

A bomb of gas pipe filled with dynamite exploded harmlessly, minutes after Dr Taft and a patient heard glass shatter. If not stopped, destruction would have been total. No clues on suspects, motive tied to local liquor dealers and gamblers opponent Creet.
May 11 in Athens Greece has accepted mediation by powers' ambassadors at Constantinople and was instructed to approach Turkey to learn under what terms Turkey would declare expenses of the war and pay indemnity. Constantinople reports the war cost at 25 million dollars to be paid in annual installments guaranteed by Thessalian revenues.

New York May 13 Edward H Teneyck son of James A Teneyck the noted oarsman will compete for the diamond sculls at the Henley regatta in July. He recently won an intermediate title at Saratoga and clocked a mile and a half time twelve seconds faster than the senior winner. Teneyck is a Worcester Mass public school pupil and one of the youngest to hold a championship. He will be near eighteen at Henley.
