A Vast Undertaking Monopoly in Ocean Carriage

The Interstate Commerce Commission is hearing a landmark case brought by Cosmopolitan Shipping Co of Philadelphia against Hamburg American and other lines. It accuses foreign carriers and state railways of coercive rebates and a monopoly in eastbound and interior U.S. traffic, aiming to extend U.S. commerce law to foreign trade. The case, argued weeks ago, tests the commission's reach over foreign commerce and signals possible congressional expansion next winter to cover foreign trade. Hamburg American is cited as building a monopoly of eastbound traffic from several major U.S. cities toward Europe, with alleged unfair methods stifling competition and affecting American producers and shippers.
