A Bill Against Millionaires and Estates Taxes
A proposed New Jersey measure would cap how much property a person may leave to heirs and divert surplus value to state needs. The bill, first introduced in a prior session, argues large estates burden the public, alleging significant fortunes arise from stock speculation and other activities. It would distribute estate proceeds to towns for welfare, roads, and public services, with strong support from those opposing concentrated wealth. The piece includes commentary from Chicago papers and notes about wealth, monopolies, and a Vermont quarry owner, plus references to railway bond litigation in Missouri and rail travel in Europe, concluding with a farm birth of a pig with two heads.
