Maine Blown From Inside After Spanish Ship Explosions

Washington reports findings from the board of survey of Admiral Cervera’s fleet near Santiago de Cuba. It concludes that internal explosions and well aimed gunfire caused rapid sinking, with several ships torpedoed or struck by eight to six inch shells while British and American crews inflicted heavy damage. The report notes torpedoes preloaded and the remarkable firepower of American gunnery during the engagement.

Shelling audit shows Brooklyn led hits in Cervera action

Records from an examining board tally Spanish fleet hits by ship and shell type after the battle at Santiago. Brooklyn struck most five inch shells totaling twenty in vital hits, with Iowa second for four inch hits and Oregon Texas and others contributing. Indications Schley’s flagship fought each vessel in turn and led the destruction of Cervera’s squadron. A separate report claims Schley submitted his own account of the action to Secretary Long, asserting flag officer status when the Spanish fleet attempted escape, while Sampson was out of signaling range. A New Haven post office clerk, Tamus W. Donnelly, was arrested for embezzling letters and $1,500 in bonds.
