M Shaw took the oath of office as Iowa governor before 6000 to 7000 spectators at the state house. In a long address he endorsed the gold standard and debt reduction. A public reception followed in the governor’s parlors with no dancing, as Shaw is described as a Methodist of strong convictions.

Fort Smith Arkansas January 13 A terrible tornado struck Fort Smith and Crawford county destroying two score lives and over a million dollars in property. Homes hotels and businesses were leveled and many buildings caught fire. Casualties include men women and children with dozens injured and 43 dead by January 14. The storm crossed the Arkansas river and left a wake of wreckage across farms and city blocks with many victims uncounted.
Reports of a Seminole revolt and massacres in Maud and Earlboro proved false after telegraph inquiries by Guy Barnes. Officials in Shawnee and Pottawatomie County confirmed no uprising, noting only Seminoles angered by two tribe members burned at the stake and heightened policing along the reservation to deter any hostilities.
Marcus A. Hanna was elected to represent Ohio in the senate for seven years and two months. If McKinley is reelected, Hanna will serve until the end of the president's second term. His term expires in March 1905, and he has risen from McKinley campaign advocate to national Republican leader and Senate member succeeding John Sherman.
The executors Norainn B. Keam and Robert I. Lincoln filed an inventory of the late George M. Pullman estate in Chicago probate court. It lists real and personal property with no real estate valuation, but notes real estate around 800000 dollars and personal estate about 6800000 dollars based on earlier will filings. A Louisville fire damaged the B F Avery & Sons plow factory causing about 760 dollars in losses in Louisville Kentucky.
