Building a Log Cabin in Iowa’s Early Days
In early Iowa pioneer life James Harlan recalls a log cabin rising with six neighbors aiding from forest logs to roofless frame. The house was finished in six to eight days using only an ax an auger a froe and a handsaw with no nails or metal. A railroad yard switchman found Gottlieb Mittman dead from an intentional self inflicted wound in West Liberty. Des Moines market space rents were renewed by twenty one dealers and four brothers hunting rabbits caused Harald Strively nine to be accidentally shot and killed. The harsh winter has failed to provide cold weather for the season so far.
