New Year’s Day and a Knightly Promise in Kilts
A reminiscence tracing a boy’s New Year’s visits to the Steele household, his crush on Mary Steele, and a vow to temperance after his mother’s urging. The account shifts to an older romance with Mary, a drunken incident, and his act of defending her, ending with a wedding-like culmination and a critique of changing New Year’s customs.
