A Mammoth Index at Last Completes British Museum Catalogue
The St James Gazette reports the British Museum index of books is finally complete after twenty years. The 1881 start brought a 4,000,000 reference manuscript catalogue for about half as many books and cross references. Since then about 500,000 new books arrived, averaging 40,000 per year. Printing costs rose as volumes issued grew from 15 to 30 annually, lowering per volume price and reducing revenue. Only about 250 civic slips are printed and 80 circulated, half given away. In total over 600 volumes hold files for 2,000,000 books and the subject index will be the major task for the new century, to begin immediately but not ready for 16 years. Jerrold and Harold also appear in a humor snippet about a charity bazar.
