In college humor, February antics replace romance with jokes roasts and rhymes. Dormitory bulletin boards overflow with homemade valentines, profuse novelty gifts, and playful insults. One dorm reports elaborate silhouettes and ink drawings of sweethearts.
A nostalgic college tale recalls Valentine pranks with clever verses and cheeky gifts, from licorice buttons to a piano of ice crackers. The piece then shifts to a Washington dispatch where President Taft defends his patronage record, denies using offices for campaign aims, and rebuts charges of influence in appointments amid ongoing political maneuvering.
A fragment laden page shows scenes from campus life including a chafing dish expert, a framed gift from a freshman, a poem about a chafing dish, a star golfer receiving keepsakes, and a basketball captain with a training sketch. Notes mention classmates, a class president misstep, and various small events with dates and places. A February promotional ad lists coats and garments.
A collection of anecdotes about historic figures who used spare moments to pursue science poetry and history. It cites Bacon Humboldt Burns Grote and a Washington official, noting their busy lives and the idea that moments are the golden sands of time when used wisely. The piece ends with a witty Harper's Weekly quip about nerve and action.
