The article recalls Wordsworth’s seven year tenure as laureate and his rare court appearances. In May 1845 he attended a state ball, wearing borrowed attire and a sword linked to Sir Humphry Davy, provoking commentary on the incongruity of the lakes poet in formal court dress. He later described the gracious reception from the queen to an American friend, noting tears from Mrs. Everett and reflecting on republican values versus monarchy. The piece notes Haydn’s and Hayden’s reflections on the scene and the poet’s reluctant proximity to court life.
The Chicago Post reflects on the American raven’s shrinking presence in Britain and parts of the United States, noting its adaptation to Rocky Mountain cliffs where it nests away from people. It praises the bird’s literary prominence while detailing its physical traits, behavior, and the shifting perceptions of its value across cultures.
Horticultural experts describe the pineapple as a solidified blossom. In Hawaii the fruit is grown from June to October on about 7,000 acres. Planters use three planting aims: raw shipment, canning, and juice. To grow large specimens about 5,000 plants per acre. closer planting yields smaller disks for cans, and even denser planting favors juice production.
A man with an old clock seeks repair at a jeweler’s stall. The jeweler inspects the clock, declares no fault and offers free service. A nun asks for payment, and the jeweler replies that this isn’t professional treatment. This is followed by a coroner’s inquest reference.
A reflective note traces the shift from reading garden books to hands on work. The author recalls choosing enduring principles and developing a personal approach to garden salvation with humility and steady effort.
A New York Post item recounts a domestic scene where a mother measures a tonic dose for her sick child. The boy, mishearing, mocks the phrase claiming he is already hungry and cannot wait to eat. The exchange highlights humorous misunderstanding over medicine and appetite.
