R B Brown of Zanesville was chosen as commander in chief at the Grand Army of the Republic annual meeting in Minneapolis with William H Amatrong as senior vice commander and E B Fenton as junior vice commander. Arch Bishop Ireland was named chaplain in chief. Other officers were selected by acclamation and the next encampment spot favored Saratoga. Brown, born 1845 in Ohio, served in the Fifteenth Ohio and later Fourteenth Army Corps, and is editor of the Zanesville Courier.

Mrs Patrick Osborne aged forty seven on a farm southeast of Madella Minnesota was fatally burned pouring kerosene into a stove. A two year old daughter nearby also fatally burned. Mother died at 7 80 p m and child at midnight. An earthquake shock reported in Maedoza Buenos Aires province with telegraph lines interrupted. Panic among the population.

West Lake Avenue tragedy ends in murder suicide
Edward B. Sanderson, secretary of the California Truck Company and a wealthy man, killed his wife with a razor at their West Lake Avenue home and then took his own life. A statement from his brother-in-law said Sanderson was mentally unbalanced.

Denver Officials Held for Contempt in Franchise Case
Prominent Denver men including George N. Ordway and Henry J. Doherty were committed to county jail by Judge Ren B. Lindsey until they pay 500 dollar fines for contempt of court in a franchise election protest. Watchers William Tait and Theodore Griffin were fined 24 dollars each for blocking ballot boxes. Danville Aug 17 Joseph G Cannon speaker of the national house of representatives was renominated unanimously by the Republican congressional convention here and endorsed for president in 1908. He defended revisions to the tariff and attacked a labor measure criticized by Samuel Gompers. The convention opened at 1 PM with Cannon renominated by acclamation for the eighteenth consecutive time amid strong support for a presidential boom.
