Eldora Aug 17 The death of Ed P Gaines yesterday stirred sorrow among friends. Born in New York about 62, he served in the late war, lived in Pon du Lac Wis where he married Carrie Fell and had two children Elliott C and Marguerite. He later moved to Eldora 25 years ago, bought grain then ran a grocery business until two years ago. Funeral 2:30 Sunday with Rev Kent officiating.
A 19 year old unnamed girl, demented after being pursued by a mob of youths, was pelted with stones and sought shelter in a private house where authorities placed her under care for insanity. Police report notes the incident as a sad event in Albia dated August 17. Brings a correction about a separate elopement case where C. Johnson paid costs for a home wedding after a brief pursuit and reconciliation with Miss Jessie Smith.
All gubernatorial candidates or their representatives have arrived in Cedar Rapids and opened headquarters. The convention is described as highly unsettled and expected to be the most heavily attended and fiercely contested Republican gathering in the state’s history.

New Orleans Aug 15 ME Neil, a noted cotton statistician, issued a circular on the improving crop. He estimates a season’s total near 9,780,000 bales with 500,000 to 1,000,000 more possible. If Texas yields 3,050,000 bales, total could reach 10,500,000 bales depending on rains and conditions.
On August 18 in Christiania and Norway details emerge of a carrier pigeon found on the northeast coast of Liplind bearing a message from explorer Andres. The Alken crew shot two carrier pigeons before the letter reached Atos bladet and Stonsholm, with news traveling via Norwegian and Tromsø ships to the steamship Lofoun and the Lorney polar expedition.
A southbound Santa Fe passenger train was robbed near Euavid Oklahoma at 2 16 am. Robbers failed to blow the trench and escaped with 40 dollars from a local safe. Dynamite beneath the Wells Yargo site did not open the safe. Passengers were not molested. Authorities report no other money recovered.
