Chicago dispatch says Mayor Harrison apologized after receiving a letter from Spanish minister Duke de Arcos objecting to Chicago inviting him to Dewey Day. The Spanish envoy’s indignation spurred a rebuke of perceived neglect by local Dewey committee members and a resignation to end the incident.
The Spanish minister Duke de Arcos letters that the Chicago invitation to celebrate Manila’s anniversary was a mistake and an insult. Mayor Harrison apologizes, stating carelessness or ignorance by a clerk led to sending invites to officials in Washington, including the diplomatic corps, with Arcos expressing doubt of intentional offense.
Berlin dispatch reports Polish Socialists adopting a resolution to join the German Social Party, shifting emphasis from national to economic issues. The move aims to strengthen unity within socialism, noted as crucial by the government. American pastor Dr Dickie hosted a musicale for Christian endeavor members, while U.S. Treasury Agent Pertello and daughter settled there with a residence warming attended by the American colony and several consuls. Also: Burlington reports Mayor Dune rescued from a blazing house fire after an explosion. he was injured but not fatally.
Springfield April 17 As a result of a meeting of the Mine Managers Association at East St bowls Sunday all coal mines in the state have been ordered to close at 5 pm yesterday and remain closed until the operators recognize the association and treat with it as such. Operators refuse to treat with this organization arguing mine managers are confidential officers and state officials since they hold state certificates. There is no affiliation with the miners union, and it is doubtful miners will stop work on the order. Not all mine managers belong to the association and many with certificates could step in to replace those who do.
A Marquette syndicate plans to mine in the Cape Nome area using a pumped placer method. They will provide water to leaseholders for a share of gold output, using a 4 horsepower pump and a gas engine from a local manufacturer as their first gear.
Reports show growing property damage in Texas and Kansas with two fatalities so far. Other items note a Third Cavalry operation in the Philippines, architect Dankmar Adler dead in Chicago, Porto Rico governor nominee Charles H Allen, and various global events.
A dispatch from Ladysmith dated April 16 reports Boers retreating east of the town as British advance guards press forward. Other cables note De laager, Wepener siege lifted, Rouxville abandoned, and a 6,000 strong Boer body moving toward Belimpte with Basuto frontier activity along the border. Mafeking dispatches describe continued hunger and strain.
John W. Gates of American Steel and Wire confirms twelve constituent mills have shut down due to overproduction. Plants in Pittsburg Cleveland Joliet Waukequon DeKalb Newcastle Anderson and other locations halt ops. Four thousand workers affected as Gates cannot say when mills resume.
In Winterset Tennessee on April 16 a farmer, John Sterling, set fire to his home barn and outbuildings after his wife Mrs Sterling had sought a divorce. Four horses and several hogs perished in the blaze. Sterling fled, was found in a straw stack, refused to surrender, and set fire to the stack before cutting his throat. He survived with serious burns and injuries.

April 16. Louis Fortreide sues the Retail Clerks union for 10000 damages and seeks an injunction to stop union interference with his store. The clerk’s union used a veteran to block customers while a rival hired a man jailed for assault on the union worker. The suit tests the legality of boycotts.

One Grundy County farm eight miles south of Ackley is stated as well improved and available.
