Allotments Halted for Quinsault Lands Controversy

F R Archer, longtime allotting agent for Indian lands on the Quinsault reservation, is placed on indefinite furlough by the Commissioner of Indian Affairs. Superintendent H H Johnson will oversee, as all further allotments are stopped. The motive remains unclear though timber and potential oil interests are suspected. About 150 Quinsault Indians and 1200 1300 others await allotments as development looms.

Seven-Year-Old Drowns In Hoquiam River

Lloyd Lucas aged seven, son of Mr and Mrs John B Lucas of 1905 Riverside avenue, drowned in the Hoquiam river between 5 and 6 last evening after slipping from a boom at the National mill while fishing with schoolmate Ward Jacques. Rescue efforts continued into the night and resumed this morning. The Lucases are longtime Hoquiam residents with Mr Lucas active in real estate.

County Fair Opens with Record Races and Show in Elma

The Chehalis County fair opens tomorrow in Elma with a full five day schedule. Officials promise top horses from across the state, abundant races, and splendid exhibits including dairy stock, flowers, fruit, vegetables and grains. Special prizes include Pyramid flour rewards and a grand display.

Fire in National mill at Hoquiam threatens big loss

A fire broke out on the main floor of the National mill in Hoquiam last evening around five o clock. Prompt sprinkler action and four fire streams kept the blaze from destroying the mammoth plant, with damage mainly to belting and repairs planned overnight. The cause is believed to be a hot box near the main shaft.
