Oil Boom Prospects Grow on Grays Harbor Fields

Drilling advances by Jefferson Oil on the Hoh river and a Tahola gas mound project near Tahola accelerate plans for multiple wells on the Olympic peninsula. Mill Resumes Operations in Grays Harbor Plant

Grays Harbor mill restarted operations after a three week shutdown. The planer plant operated during the break as workers completed installation of a turbine engine motors edger saws and a new log haul. Other repairs were finished taking advantage of favorable weather and daylight.

American woods go to the Orient

U S exports of lumber rise with more than a quarter of a million feet sent to Samoa Hawaii and the Philippine Islands. Douglas fir dominates shipments while California redwood sugar pine eastern ash and other woods are used for furniture boats and construction.

O. W. R. N. Reverts Owl Train Schedule to Montesano

Beginning tomorrow the Owl train No. 44 on the O W R N line will revert to the old schedule and stop only at South Montesano. The service to Montesano had been limited as a short trial.

Sidney Chinn Dies in Logging Train Collision

Two logging trains collided on the Coats Fordney railroad injuring brakeman Frank Dweyer who lost a foot and saving his life after rolling from the pilot. Sidney Chinn, head brakeman, was killed, believed unable to jump as the engines struck. Coroner Hunter will investigate blame. Chinn, 23 or 24, was a Aberdeen figure, widowed wife Anna Carlson, child deceased, home at 116 East First Street, sister Grace Chinn a stenographer for A. E. Cross.

Walter Smith Found Guilty of Horse Cruelty at Montesano

Montesano Sept 8 The jury convicted Walter Smith of cruelty to a horse after a five minute verdict. The judge will impose sentence, with a maximum of 250 dollar fine and 90 days in jail. Deputy Prosecutor Nelson prosecuted. Martin F Smith was the defendant's attorney.

Mills Increase Three Fourths of Million

The Herald compiles Chehalis county mill assessments for 1912 and 1913 to show valuations may be excessive or taxes too low in past years. The board vows reforms for 1914 with new appraisal methods. 42 mills listed show widespread increases. eight protests, mostly about lumber or logs, hint at past favoritism in taxation. The logging camps also rise to 992 049 in valuation from 524 173 in 1912, with large gains in engines, railroads, locomotives, timber on state land, and private booms.
