Tragedy at Cosmopolis: Marshall Smith Killed in Guarded Arrest

In Cosmopolis Chehalis county a fatal shooting ends with County Commissioner Silas W. Smith dying from a gunshot wound after a dispute over arming suspect W. J. Yourex. Constable Chas. Y. Fenwick of Aberdeen is seriously wounded yet alive. Yourex is captured and jailed.

Northwest Educators to Lecture Course for Pupils and Citizens

City Superintendent Kerr leads a four lecture and concert series over the coming months. President E A Bryan of Pullman College opens on December 19 with a popular yet high quality talk. A January grand concert features Grace Helen Bradley and Nellie Redinger. February brings Rev. W D Simonds on The Richest Man in the World. March or April presents Frank P Graves on Patriotism, with Graves lecturing to the High School beforehand. Alex B Coffey of Seattle closes with The Piano and the Dishrag.

Middleton for Commissioner in Aberdeen Republicans Nominate

The Aberdeen Republican mass meeting chose A. W. Middleton as candidate for county commissioner after the death of Silas Smith. W. W. Agstie and John Lindstrom were proposed but declined, the gathering harmonizing without a ballot. Chairman Jacob Weatherwax and Judge Pearson warned nonbelievers.
