Reducing Creosote Use in Wood Preservation
Tests show water soluble salts did not discolor wood and 60 percent of treatment cost comes from preservatives. Creosote needs only half a pound per cubic foot to prevent decay, yet 5 to 10 pounds are used, with some cases 10 to 20 times the theoretical amount. Further studies aim to determine safer lower quantities.
