Roosevelt says he will not seek another presidential renomination

In Washington on May 3, President Roosevelt rejected ongoing talk of a 1904 Republican bid. He indicated he would not accept renomination under any circumstances and recalled his 1901 pledge that the two term custom applies to substance, not form. He suggested Secretary Root or Secretary Taft could carry forward his policies if the party nominates either man.
