Pinchot Dismissed as Public Servant for Letter to Senator
The President dismissed Chief Forester Gifford Pinchot over a public letter to Senator Delavan read in the Senate. The act, seen as insubordination, followed Pinchot’s defense of the anti Ballinger record and Glavis’s firing, with debate over motive and public interest versus official propriety. Pinchot, famed for shaping American forestry, is praised by supporters as a selfless conservationist who risked his position to protect the public domain and forests.
