Seattle February 5 An official Union Pacific announcement states the railroad will contract 5 000 freight cars costing 5 500 000 to 6 000 000 dollars with delivery starting mid April as fast as production allows This order targets lumber needs in the Pacific Northwest with 4060 double sheep boxcars 400 stock cars and 600 all steel autos 50 feet long underframes included The move marks early signs of renewed prosperity and confidence for western industry and rail traffic

Elks Smoker a Big Success in Local Event

The Elks lodge smoker drew about 250 members with lively stunts and encored acts from 9 to 11:30. A 12 piece orchestra provided music as story tellers and athletic feats, led by Captain Dick Altican and Nick Randich in a drawn bout, and Tom Morgan of Seattle defeating Chi Preston in six rounds.

Indian Prisoner Granted Visit Before Son's Death

Hoquiam February 6 Fred Pope a Quinsault Indian serving a murder sentence at McNeill Island penitentiary was escorted through Hoquiam to Taholah to see his dying son Chester. The trip marked one of the rare instances of a murderer being allowed a pass for such a journey to a close relative's illness.

Old man arrested for liquor to Indian girl in Hoquiam

Feb 6 Harry Soper about 85 was arrested by Patrolman Toliver while giving liquor to an Indian girl in Hoquiam. He was moved to Montesano yesterday and agreed to plead guilty. An information will be filed today by the county attorney.

Commissioners Award North River Road Extension Contract

Montesano Feb 5 The county board awarded Holmlund Johnson the contract for clearing grubbing and grading the North river road extension to the Pacific county line at about 3735 for planking to Robert Carl The board ordered right of way costs paid from the district funds and directed a 100 Warrant to Carl for right of way for Road District No 4 They will appraise mills in Chehalis county at 3800 this year with 20 percent yearly renewals over five years The project includes Wishkah river road improvements and culvert and gravel surfacing along the G N Thomas county road plus clock system regulation for the courthouse and a fiscal report for December 31 1918

Chamber Reorganizes with New By-Laws and 12 Directors

The Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce met at Hotel Washington and approved a full reorganization with new by-laws. An executive committee of 25 to 50 members will govern most operations and set officer salaries, while dues rise to six dollars for individuals and twelve for corporations.

Winneys Fined for Disorderly House in Police Court

Mr and Mrs Herbert Winney were convicted in police court Tuesday evening for conducting a disorderly house and each fined $50. Judge Snider admonished them to align their home with city dignity. Mrs T S Mc Glauflin and C Johnson had charges dismissed. D Baker forfeited a $25 bail. The Winneys have faced police action four times.
