Tax reform urged for fairer Seattle taxes

T D Rockwell former state tax board chair urged sweeping reforms at a Taxpayers League meeting. He proposed surveying unsurveyed lands adding timber lands sale by the state university and a tuition system. He argued property and money should be taxed separately to raise millions for the treasury.

Salmon Pack Activity in Grays Harbor District

About 100000 cases of salmon were packed at six canneries in Grays Harbor this season. Harbor pack values approached 500000 dollars with four Harbor canneries producing 60000 to 75000 cases and two Moclips canneries about 25000 cases. The season averaged with favorable prices, ending as plants sort shipments and tally results.

Government to Release Tenino Oil Field Report

Seattle December article notes George Watkin Evans was commissioned by the federal bureau of mines to investigate Tenino oil fields. Evans will travel Friday and send findings to the bureau, which will publish the report after review. Evans has prior government and mining experience in King County and Alaska.

Elks Memorial Program Set for Hoquiam

Final details for the Hoquiam Elks memorial service to honor departed members were announced by Exalted Ruler L H Brewer. The program features solos by Mrs M C Harris and Ralph L Baldwin, a eulogy by E R Ingersoll, a male quartet, lodge ceremonies, and a benediction by Rev J W Beard.

Ferns Remanded to County Jail for 30 Days

Abraham Ferns was brought from Cosmopolis to Montesano at Justice Friedlander’s request to serve 30 days in the county jail. The judge ruled he has an affection for old junk and other items claimed by others.

Toys From Germany Arrive Amid War Freight Hurdles

J Wolff received shipments from Europe including toys from Germany gloves from Paris and England. The goods arrived just in time for the holiday trade despite high freight and war insurance costs. W. C. Mumaw of the Chamber of Commerce met eastern county farmers this week to discuss the Chehalis county produce dinner at Hotel Washington on December 17. Farmers show openness to cooperation with merchants and consumers and a plan likely to benefit all may be decided at the dinner.

Organize Republican Club Formed in City Hall

In Chehalis county a Young Men's Republican club was formed at city hall last evening. A committee including W. H. Tucker, F. M. Cook and A. E. Graham presented a constitution and by laws which were adopted after discussion. A new meeting is planned at 8 p.m. next Tuesday for officer elections.

Mrs. P. F. Halferty Dies After Illness at 55

Mrs. P F Halferty, 55, died this morning at 4 30 at the family home 118 East Third street after a long illness. Funeral private Sunday at one from Whiteside chapel. Born in Rochester England she came to the United States at age 12. Survived by husband two daughters Mrs Lillie and Mrs Alice King and five sons Guy Damon Frank George and Phillip.

United States Gains By War Improving Foreign Trade

Washington December 2 reports Edward E Pratt chief of the bureau of foreign and domestic commerce estimates the European war will add about 500 million dollars to U S foreign commerce over the year and the rise in orders may total a half billion by next August Russia led in tool orders soon after the war began with lathes and machines while England and France have joined the demand and cash accompanies most orders Alarming delivery issues exist but the potential is high and food shipments have surged alongside manufacturing exports

No Fraud Shown In Hoquiam Theater Contest Case

After a trial from 2 p m to 11 20 p m Justice of the Peace J M Phillips Aberdeen dismissed the charge against W F Myers and Carl Olsen of obtaining money under false pretenses connected with the Novelty theater contest in Hoquiam. Prosecutor J E Stewart presented the state case with Hoquiam witnesses J T Mahan Mrs J T Adelsberger and John Holton and Harry James theater manager. Defense lawyer Martin F Smith Called A Sherar Olaf Oberg W A Medley Charles Knokey C M Davis and R Camillo of Hoquiam. Judge Phillips credited the state’s evidence but ruled no crime occurred and noted he did not approve of such contests though the theater was in good faith with good intentions.
