Supt. R B Cheatham calls on parents and citizens to ensure full attendance at the September 11 opening. The district hires 16 strong teachers and stresses vaccination, compulsory attendance rules, and cooperation to boost student progress.
The Methodist Sunday School will establish a dedicated choir for the Sunday service. The group will be composed of young people and directed by Mrs James A Hill ensuring the endeavor succeeds.
Rev. James P. Pressley pastor of the Seeder church at Due West will preach at the Presbyterian church Sabbath morning in Abbeville. He will receive a warm welcome as he visits the area.
Mr and Mrs J W Anderson of Florence Mrs R L Edmunds and Miss Florence Edmunds of Sumter visit Abbeville at the home of Mr and Mrs E M Anderson They tour the city lights and discuss travel options during their stay.
Laurens August 31 The Hon Robert A Cooper announced his support for Governor Manning in the gubernatorial race following Tuesday's primary. He says he will back Manning and former Governor Blease in the second primary, respecting voters rights while not evading his own stance.
A. H. Dagnall thanks voters for support and regrets inability to meet each one personally. He expresses gratitude for being considered worthy to represent them.
Friends in Abbeville celebrate Gottlob Neuffer as he is promoted to sergeant in the Machine Gun Company of the First Regiment South Carolina National Guard now stationed on the border. Neuffer’s promotion prompts widespread local congratulations.
Abbeville youths enjoyed a lively season of dancing picnics parties and house gatherings. The town hosted many visitors as Abbeville youth prepare for college with an unusually large delegation heading to state colleges.
Mr and Mrs A S Thomas attended the marriage of Miss Genevieve Hunter and Mr Paul Watkins of Anderson last week. Her Abbeville visitants wish the couple happiness and prosperity in their life together.
Miss Hat Tie Brinkley visiting sister Mrs. Brinkley sang at the Baptist church and the odust church on the last two Sabbaths. Her sweet trained voice charmed listeners. She also performed at the Bridge Club meeting hosted by Frank B. Gary.
Miss Louise Chilcote of Baltimore and Miss Eloise Bacon of Virginia arrived last Sunday. Chilcote will resume work at Philaon and Henrys after a prior season. Bacon will milliner for The Haddon-Wilson Co. They are boarding at Mr. W. D. Bartwdals's and receive a warm welcome to our locality.
Baby County voters distributed about 1 160 votes across offices in the first state general election. Several county candidates failed to file expense accounts but were allowed to advance to a second county race by the Democratic executive committee. Additional results list governors, lieutenant governors, secretaries, treasurers, railroad officials, and congressional candidates with counts and unopposed or advancing slots.
The Ladies Society of the A. R. P. church will meet Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. R. N. Tiddy on Ave Welpat. A full meeting is desired.
Miss Belle Thomson arrives in Abbeville to reside in the Superintendent's house at the mill village with her sister Miss Cora Thomson who will teach the mill school. The noted welfare worker is welcomed as a key addition to local social service efforts.
Rev and Mrs H Waddell Pratt departed last week for Washington DC to visit relatives and friends. They will then travel to Lexington Virginia for a month away from home.
Rey and Jas with L. Martin will hold a prolonged meeting in Townville Anderson County starting next Sunday September 10. The event is to begin on that date and run for an extended period as announced.

Norfolk dispatch reports the condemned USS Franklin begins its final voyage as a tug tows it to East Port Maine for beach burning. Purchasers will recover copper rivets and sheeting from the ship’s timbers after demolition.

Mr B C Mellwaine died at his Long Cane home on Friday September 1 1916 at four o clock after a long illness. Funeral services were held at Long Cane church the same day. He was a son of Mellwaine and Eakin born at the old Mellwaine homestead and survived by a large family including Mrs Tolbert Mrs Hannah Mrs Hardy Miss Sallie Alma and John and James Mellwain. Surviving brothers and sister include G E McIlwaine Due West A McIlwaine Abbeville and Emma McIlwain Due West. He was a respected farmer and member of Long Cane church.
Mrs M H Wilson Mrs James Ferguson Mrs Sims Allen and Mr mer Wilson leave this week for Graniteville to visit for a few days with Mrs Lila Wilson.
Professor J. W. Thomson spent several days in Abbeville this week as a guest of his brother Dr. J. G. Thomson. He has many old friends in Abbeville who are glad to see him.

Joel M. Walker died after falling into an 8,000 gallon gasoline tank while taking a measurement. The tank was too large to escape unaided and he was missing for hours before his body was found. The incident occurred in Thomasville, Georgia, on September 4.

Overlong telegram wording raised costs. instructions were ignored and blank forms will be issued for the second primary. About 125 votes were cast for the county ticket. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Stark, Miss Fannie Stark, and Mr. John McKee motored to the mountains of North Carolina last Thursday. They traveled in a Haynes car and reported a delightful trip with no punctures or blow-outs, stopping in Hendersonville Asheville Black Rock and Saluda.
