Chicago reports the Amalagamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen announce a strike vote of 35 354 yes 3 490 no. A conference of executives will meet next week as 1 000 John Motreel workers in Ottumwa Iowa push a strike. The poll covered a minority of industry workers.
Washington reports a new phase in the railroad strike as the Chicago conference between the railroad labor board and five brotherhood leaders ends without a plan to avert the national walkout set for Oct. 30. Officials weigh whether to press further talks or start new government action amid continued uncertainty and a cautious Senate plans debate on related debt funding legislation next month.
In Verdery, M B Cann was beaten and shot at by Joe Fisher after Cann fired three times when corn seizure was authorized by T G White. Fisher, armed with a shotgun, advanced. Cann fired, near the Fisk home, as Fisher clashed and had a pistol torn from Cann, causing head wounds, broken rib and a dislocated finger.
After union services, Abbeville ministers welcomed Rev H L Weeks recently arrived to lead the Baptist church. Weeks preached Sunday night and received cordial greetings from Methodist Episcopal, Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Associate Reformed ministers who praised the new leader and pledged cooperation.
A man was fatally shot and his assailant fled with a pistol. a second suspect tied to the incident is Fisher’s wife who was jailed Saturday night as an accomplice. The shotgun used was recovered at Fisher’s home with two shells nearby.
Washington reports formal restoration of peace awaits exchange of ratification papers in Berlin. The treaty signed by President Harding will be deposited in German archives, with diplomatic relations and a supplemental commercial pact to follow. About 18,000 U S troops remain on the Rhine, effort to keep flag flying for stability while diplomacy proceeds.

In Paris on October 21 amid protests over Sacco and Vanzetti, a bomb exploded at a crowd during a French Communist party meeting in Wigram avenue injuring seven police officers and several demonstrators. An unexploded device was later found near Wagrem avenue. Authorities report arrests for disorderly conduct as plans for further demonstrations across French cities continue.
Washington reports Governor of the Federal Reserve Board W P G Harding returns from New York and says he does not fear a major food shortage if railroad workers strike. He believes most Americans are sensible and that disaster will be avoided, noting business improves but revival hinges on Congress action on railroad debt refinancing and fiscal policy.
Miss Minnie Ruth Cox daughter of Mr and Mrs J C Cox and a valued employee of The Press and Banner underwent an appendectomy at Memorial Hospital today. Friends wish her a rapid recovery.
Spot prices ranged 18.50 to 19 cents with December futures closing up 24 points after an unsettled session. Final quotes stood firm at 18.57, as other months also gained on the day.
