Census Bureau reports show the 1920 average American family at 4.3 persons and 5.1 per dwelling, down from 1880 and 1910 levels. The South Carolina figures list 349,126 families in 830,500 dwellings, with 4.8 persons per family and 5.1 per dwelling.
