Atlanta Suffers 3 Million Dollar Fire
A massive blaze in Atlanta on May 21 destroyed 2,500 to 3,000 homes across about 75 blocks from Decatur Street to Ponce de Leon Avenue. Mayor Candler estimates the loss at 3 million dollars. one woman died, 60 people injured, and guardsmen guarded the burned district overnight. Firefighters from several cities helped extinguish the flames, with dynamite finally stopping the fire. A piano theft arrest was the only reported crime.

Accidental Shooting Leaves Girl Injured on Porch
In Groggy Springs James Simpson’s family, three children were accidentally shot when a younger brother cocked a shotgun as the older boy returned home with the weapon. The 17 year old daughter lost her right eye, was treated at Anderson hospital, and is said to be out of danger. The younger sisters suffered painful but non serious wounds.

Registration of Men for Service Proclaimed in South Carolina
Governor Manning announces statewide registration for military service under the selective service act. All male citizens aged 21 to 30, white and colored, must register June 5 1917 from 7 am to 9 pm at designated county and city boards in Charleston and Columbia.
