President Harding urged voluntary railroad rate cuts after a White House dinner conference with 19 leading railroad executives. A special committee will study further action while executives backed cooperation with the Interstate Commerce Commission to restore business.
The Abbeville Parent-Teacher Association will meet Tuesday afternoon at 4 30 in the graded school building. Representatives from four high school literary societies will debate followed by a nominating committee report proposing next year’s officers. Members are urged to attend.
W R Bradley retires as acting collector of internal revenue and becomes director of the South Carolina income tax division. Maj John F Jones of Blacksburg to receive the internal revenue office as Bradley shifts to the tax director post. Bradley, a former superintendent of Troy and Abbeville County schools, assumes the new duties after transfer around 9 this morning.
Mrs. W. W. Sprouse died at her home in Abbeville Friday night after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Sunday morning conducted by Rev. John Carter of the Holiness Church, with interment at Long Cane center. She was about sixty and survived by two sons Roland and Son Kirby and three daughters Mrs John Beauford, Mrs Welter Scott and Mrs Ola Saveders.
Thomas A. Edison told the senate agriculture committee in executive session that fertilizer could be produced cheaper at Muscle Shoals than current methods. He declined to advise on private offers for lease or purchase, calling them hard nuts to crack, while providing details on mineral deposits and nitrogen fixation processes.
Wilson Godfrey Harvey of Charleston was sworn in as governor of South Carolina in a brief ceremony in the supreme court room with Chief Justice Eugene B. Gary administering the oath at 12 08. He succeeds resigning Governor Robert A. Cooper and pledges peaceful governance amid a calm political climate.
Clemson's 139 graduates include Abbeville men in Agriculture Samuel Williams Clarence Crowther Electrical Engineering Joseph Johnson Andrew Hill Joseph Wilson Textile Engineering John Swetenburg. The Abbeville group is praised for strong school and classroom performance.
In Igrom Washington on May 21 the dedication of the new headquarters of the National Woman's party drew South Carolina representation. Miss Caroline Graves of Abbeville delivered congratulations from the South Carolina branch, while Miss Margie Fulmer of Orangeburg carried the banner in the parade.
In dense fog off Ushant the Peninsular and Oriental line steamer Egypt of 8000 tons sank after colliding with the French freighter Seine. About 100 fatalities reported as 44 passengers and 290 crew aboard Egypt. 15 passengers and 80 crew from Egypt confirmed missing, with the Seine reaching Brest carrying survivors and bodies.
Mr Sims A Allen died this morning at his home in the Fenville section after a long illness and will be buried tomorrow at Long Cane cemetery. He came to Abbeville in 1890 from Prince Edward County Virginia and married Alice Tone Wilson. He leaves a son Frank and a daughter Louise who predeceased him, six sisters and four brothers. He was 72 and an active elder at Warrenton Presbyterian Church. Funeral time to be announced.
Washington authorities call 1 500 operators to a May 31 conference to approve district committees for offers during the strike and to prevent price gouging. Fifty major producers pledged support, aiming mine prices for bituminous coal at 2 to 3 dollars per ton under Garfield wartime standards with adjustments as needed. The plan seeks to curb wholesaler and retailer surcharges and consumer abuses.
The 19th general conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South nears closing in Hot Springs Ark with five new bishops to be consecrated tomorrow and memorial services for deceased bishops planned at noon. The body refused changing the apostolic creed wording and vetoed consolidating five Nashville church publications. It approved using a 1.5 million surplus from European war work to fund church education centers.
Treasurer R. B. Cheatham and family spent a day in McCormick with the Britt family and returned at a record five miles an hour over the road. He said mud after recent rains and new top soil roads made the trip the worst he had seen, despite having traveled in mud in France.
Delegates depart Genoa after a contentious meeting. Officials from smaller states voice disappointment over unsettled issues but agree the conference sparked better European understanding and hinted at future Soviet reconciliation. Bartholome and Lloyd George leave with cautious optimism as plans for The Hague and a non aggression pact move forward.
Reverend Melton Clark of Columbia preached at the Presbyterian church to a large and interested congregation Sunday morning and evening. During his Abbeville stay he lodged at the Eureka Hotel.
