Dr. P H B E Sloan secretary treasurer of Clemson College died suddenly Saturday morning while seated. He served since Clemson’s founding and was cherished by many of the state’s youths. British Forces Make Fresh Gains Front Richebourg
Field Marshal Sir John French reports that the first army captured German trenches along a two mile front south of Richebourg L Avoue. German prisoners number unclear but 550 have been cleared to the lines. several bodies surrendered, though one was annihilated by German artillery while attempting to surrender. The Civic Club met at Mrs. W P Greene's with reports from Mrs. J C Hill on Bennettsville federation and officers were re elected. Strawberry ice cream was served.

Austrians Advance Toward Lemberg Capture Drohobycz

British offensive drives Germans back two miles at front
London May 17 Field Marshal Sir John French reports British forces have resumed the offensive after two weeks of defense and have swept across and captured German trenches south of Richebourg L Avoue on a two mile front, taking numerous prisoners. Elsewhere on the western front activity is light while Vienna notes slight action on the eastern front and reports potential German Austrian maneuvering. A Zeppelin returning to Belgium was attacked near the coast, damaged but its fate unclear. Parliament meets Thursday coordinating Italy's stance, with trains ready to remove ambassadors if needed. Paris also notes British units capturing several positions in the latest update.

Strawberries have been plentiful in Abbeville this season and delightful in taste. They are selling at two quarts for a quarter. John Duncan visited town with forty quarts and said he had only gone over half his bed. Mrs George White gathered a basket on Friday while Mrs Oscar Cochran sold eighteen dollars worth from six rows.

French Capture Prisoners in Various Engagements
In actions north of LeBasse additional German trenches were taken with about a thousand prisoners. At Ville-Sur-Tourbe the French captured 400 prisoners. In the Aisley Woods they took several German works and 400 more prisoners.
