Railways Seek $1 Billion Rate Increase to Meet 6 Percent Basis

Washington May 4 The nations railroads seek an additional 1 017 000 000 to raise income to the 6 percent basis under the transportation net The Eastern lines propose freight rate increases of 10 to 12 percent to yield 21 1 percent more revenue Southern lines 30 percent and Western lines to be announced later The move accompanies the interstate commerce commission rate structure review as net income fell from 1 056 000 000 in 1916 to 510 000 000 last year with investment rising over 2 000 000 000 The railroads claim operating costs rose 99 1 percent since 1916 while revenues grew 36 37 percent The 20 1 16 000 000 valuation of the system was cited as basis for rate changes and refinancing questions.
