Death of Hon. Joshua W. Ashley Ends Long Service
Anderson county mourns Hon. Joshua Whitner Ashley a 20 year South Carolina legislator and Honea Path resident who died Saturday after a three month illness. Funeral services were held at Mt Bethel church with interment in nearby cemetery. Born 1848 he rose from poverty to wealth and public leadership championing labor farm and veteran causes. He led the repeal of Lloyd Radical bonds and earned the nickname The Watch Dog of the Treasury. He left six children and 24 grandchildren plus two great grandchildren.

Dublin Rebellion Leaders Surrender After Downfall
May 1 official word says all rebel leaders in Dublin surrendered. About 450 rebels laid down arms at the Parnell monument in Sackville Street and marched out under a white flag. A few holdouts continued sporadic attacks while discussions to end the uprising proceeded. James Connolly reportedly wounded and captured at the castle.
