Large Moonshine Still Is Raided On Savannah River Island
A vast moonshine operation on a small Savannah River island near Bordeaux was smashed by U S Deputy Marshal C J Bruce Sheriff F F Edmunds and local constables. The running still 300 yards from cover was abandoned as two white Georgia men escaped with copper equipment sinking mash and gear. Nine fermenters and 2000 gallons of mash were destroyed along with three bateaux. The raid claimed the largest still seized in South Carolina in years and tied to whiskey shipments into Abbeville and Greenville counties.

Tragic Drowning of Claude Fleming at Gregg's Shoals
Claude Gary Fleming 19 of Abbeville drowned Tuesday at 5 30 pm in the wheel pit of Southern Utilities power plant at Gregg's Shoals. He fell from a gangplank into a 30 foot deep, turbulent wheel pit. Dr T O Kirkpatrick helped in the rescue but Fleming died after 40 minutes. He had been at the plant after leaving work at 1 pm and was accompanied by visitors including Kirkpatrick and friends from Lowndyville. Fleming, promoted twice since October, lived Bowls Street with his parents, one sister and three brothers. Funeral held in Belton Thursday.
