America Leads World in Building War Tonnage
Washington March 18 The United States is building more warship tonnage than any other nation. Twelve super dreadnoughts and six battle cruisers totaling 699 400 tons are under construction in private and navy yards. They will carry 512 sixteen inch rifles and 24 fourteen inch rifles with electric drive engines. The fleet will include 19 superdreadnoughts and six battle cruisers in the first line and eight dreadnoughts in the second line. The six battle cruisers and six new battleships likely form a class with the South Dakota Montana North Carolina Massachusetts Indiana and Iowa. The cruisers will be about 33 knots and carry eight sixteen inch guns, at 74 feet long, 90 feet wide, 3 500 ton displacement and 180 000 horsepower. The six super-dreadnoughts will mount twelve sixteen inch rifles, be 684 feet long, 105 feet wide, displace 43 000 tons, speed 25 knots and 6 000 horsepower. Maryland to be launched at Newport News Saturday, Colorado Washington and West Virginia to carry eight sixteen inch rifles, 624 feet long, 93 feet wide, 2 600 ton displacement, speed 21 knots and 29 000 horsepower. Tennessee to be commissioned May and California to carry twelve fourteen inch rifles, 624 feet long, 87 feet wide, 32 000 tons, speed 21 knots and 28 500 horsepower.
