President Wilson says an extra Congress may be needed to arm merchant ships and confront the German submarine threat. He denounces a minority blocking action and urges a special Senate session to revise rules and enable urgent measures.
President Wilson and Vice President Marshall started their second term with a simple, patriotic ceremony in Washington. The day featured a dignified senate chamber swearing in and an open air address on the capitol plaza, echoing Washingtonian tradition and American unity.
British forces advanced on both flanks in the Somme and Ancre region. East of Gommecourt ground was ceded by the Germans, and east of Bouchavenn es 173 prisoners were taken in an attack. Heavy German casualties followed counterattacks as British guns blasted trenches behind enemy lines. The Meuse front saw limited gains for Germany, while Russian and Turkish actions continued elsewhere and a British torpedo boat destroyer was lost. A Chinese cabinet crisis emerged as the president refused to sever Germany ties.
A severe wind storm struck Troy 18 miles southwest of Greenwood at 1 pm. Several residences suffered damage including the Rev. R. F. Bradley home, with broken furniture. Other affected properties include those of Mrs. W. L. Burnside, W. W. Wardlaw, and James Davis. No lives or serious injuries reported.
Edmund A. Felder of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce and T. C. Williams returned from Charleston where they conferred with Major G. A. Youngberg on plans for the interdepartmental board visit. They said the conference was satisfactory and tentative nitrate fixation plant sites were agreed upon.
Maryland coast guard stations report eleven died while attempting to assist the American tanker Louisiana stranded near Ocean City Maryland. Nine victims were aboard the coast guard cutter Yamaday as the engine room flooded.
The L. W. White company Abbeville Ford agent reports a factory notice requiring bona fide orders for every car shipped. Demand nationwide is rising while production lags, limiting dealer stock. Prospective buyers are urged to consult Abbeville Ford agents soon to avoid disappointment.
David Boyce Ellis died February 27 at his Due West residence after a lingering illness. He was about 44, son of Magistrate A R Ellis, married to Elizabeth Armstrong, with several children surviving. A member of the Due West Associate Reformed Presbyterian church, he was buried there Thursday with many relatives and friends present.
Mr. Robert S. Link received word from Congressman Aiken that Francis L. Link, expected home for a visit, had an appendectomy in Manila on February fifth and would leave the hospital on March fifth. This likely prevents his homecoming visit at this time.
Mrs. George Penney and Mrs. Courtney Wilson are back at the Philson and Henry store for the Spring season. Friends and customers are pleased to have them return and serve shoppers in the new season.
York dated March 4 reports Rev. Neil E. Pressly of Hickory Grove arriving in Jacksonville from Tampico Mexico where he served as a missionary under the Associate Reformed Church since 1879. He resigned last fall for health reasons and plans a stay with his son in Seffner Florida. wife and daughter remain in Tampico to settle affairs.
Mr. E. M. Anderson departed Monday night for Columbia to conduct business connected with the Tri State Water and Light convention.
Washington reports a 26 hour filibuster led by Senator La Follette and backed by Senator Stone blocked the armed neutrality bill. President Wilson's spokesman condemns the move as the most reprehensible in modern civilised history. The measure would have allowed arming American ships against German submarine threatens.
The Minister's Association will hold a meeting at the home of Rev Geo W Swops this Friday at 4 PM. Full attendance is desired.
Washington reports indicate a decision on arming U S vessels is delayed while legal advisers review presidential power. debate centers on convoy rights and whether the Shipping Board can arm ships or whether old statutes restrict such action.
Mrs Cason is improving at home after a recent illness. Friends throughout the county will be interested to learn she is recovering and progressing well.
Lewis Owen remains in the hospital after surgery on Wednesday. He is recovering well and doctors report he is doing nicely. Lesley also underwent the same operation and is improving.

John Lomax and Raymond Stilwell hosted a dinner for friends on Friday evening. A turkey dinner followed as guests arrived and dancing to the music of the local violinist extended the festivities into the late hours. The event was one of the season’s most enjoyable gatherings.
Robins migrating north filled the town with chatter, while adults chased away children armed with air guns and parlor rifles. The writer condemns allowing a boy under twelve to wield such weapons as an example of over indulgent parenting and a danger to the community.
Mrs Mary H Chase of Kenperty North Carolina begins for Haddon-Wilson Co as milliner for the spring season. Also in town is Miss Antoinette Baughm of Baltimore assisted by Miss Nannie Seal and Mrs Courtney Wilson.
In Abbeville the mayor's court dealt with liquor violations by Charles Jones, Wade and T M Alexander. Charles Jones, a colored man, was found guilty and fined one hundred dollars or thirty days in jail. The Alexanders, white father and son, chose jury trials. both were convicted and sentenced to thirty days on the chain gang or a one hundred dollar fine, with attorney J Howard Moore representing them.
