Dr J W Babcock Dies In Columbia
Dr J W Babcock longtime superintendent of the State Hospital for the Insane in Columbia died Friday morning after a brief illness. He was born in Chester August 11 1866 educated at Harvard University and received an honorary LL D from the South Carolina College. He is survived by his wife and three daughters and the funeral will be held in Chester. He was a noted expert on pellagra and headed a private sanatorium in recent years.

Fertilizer Sales Drop in Cotton Region

114 Year Old Youth Shoots Self After School Fight
Detroit March 4. Arthur Coleman 14 shot and killed himself in his home after a quarrel over attending school. In a note he said goodbye to his father and stepmother and wished to see his mother. He had joined family prayers then rose at about 1 AM and used a rifle to shoot himself in the abdomen. Coleman attended Case High School and was noted for his fighting prowess.

Legion Post Launches Spring Drive For New Members
Last Saturday morning John Lo max and his squad of American Legion barrage men fired the opening gun in their spring offensive for new members for the local post. A show window in the old Cash Bar gain Store building was turned into a neat advertisement with flags posters and white paint. A soldier in uniform with tin hat and mask stands at attention. A Red Cross nurse in white and an autographed picture of Marshal Foch hang in the background recalling the war in France and the Legionnaires’ role.

Little Girl Saves Train From Wreck
In Asheville on March 4 Anna Belle Dunn ten years old warned the conductor of a landslide on the Toxaway branch of the Southern Railway. She ran a mile to reach the station and reported large rock and dirt blocking the track near a curved cut, arriving just before the train departed.

Betty Andrews, who called herself Betty Andrews and claimed to be a chorus girl, pleaded guilty to a statutory offense and was placed on 11 months probation at the state farm. The murder accessory charge against her was nolle pressed, and her husband J E Guest of Gainesville was granted custody by Judge John D Humphries.
