National Guard Recruits Rise Amid Slow State Quotas

Washington reports the National Guard recruiting at about 1000 men daily while states remain far below quotas. Across 36 states plus the District of Columbia and Hawaii, net gains total 9536 officers and enlisted, led by New York with 2298, Massachusetts 684, and Pennsylvania 669, with Rhode Island, Missouri, and Alabama posting losses.

Young Peoples Christian Union Organized

The Associate Reformed Presbyterian church youth met on Sabbath afternoon and formed a Young Peoples Christian Union. Officers were elected: Miss Ruth McLane president, Miss Lydia Owen vice president, John Magill secretary, and Katherine Faulkner treasurer. They plan active work under the new organization.

Registration Returns Show 9 569 382 Enrolled Nationwide

Official war registration figures released from Washington enumerate 9 569 382 total registrants about 96 per cent of the census bureau estimate with Nia Gara county New York and three Wyoming precincts missing. Among those reported 3 847 94 are white citizens 953 899 colored 1 239 865 naturalized foreigners from outside Germany 111 823 naturalized Germans and 6 001 Indians. Census officials said no major evasion pattern appeared in the returns.

Charley Greene’s Five Dollar Red Cross Gift Shines

Abbeville canvass sees two large donations. Abbeville Cotton Mills contributes five hundred dollars, boosting the drive. Charley Greene, a one legged barber shop patron, volunteers five dollars, paying a quarter in cash, inspiring local volunteers to rally for the cause.

The Presbyterian church invites the public to a July 1 morning service and July 1 night service where Rev. H. W. Pratt will answer who ought to come to the Lord's Supper and who ought not to come as preparation for the July 8 observance.

Union Open Air Service at Presbyterian Church

The union service was held in the open air pavilion at the Presbyterian church last Sabbath night. All summer services will be held here. The Sabbath service Sundays were accredited to the Associate Reformed church and Psalms were sung by a large crowd. Dr. Swope preached an excellent sermon and the collection supported the Red Cross.

Harris couple returns to Abbeville to settle

Mr and Mrs W H Harris have moved back to Abbeville to make their future home and occupy a house on Magazine street owned by W P Greene. They previously lived in Augusta for three years.

Illustrated Address and Passion Play Events at Local Churches

An illustrated address on Missions in Northern India will be given in the open air grounds of the Presbyterian church on Wednesday June 27 at 8 30 PM. The Methodist Church North is highlighted for its work for Christ and the public is invited. On Wednesday July 4 at 8 30 PM the Oberammergau Passion Play will be shown with a life like transformation of faces of participants perceived by viewers as the figures they portray.

Mrs. John Bruce Dies After Long Illness

Mrs John L Bruce died June 21 1917 at her home after a long illness. The funeral was held at the home and burial followed at Long Cane Cemetery. She was the eldest daughter of the Sprouse family and is survived by her husband John L Bruce a son John and daughter Mary a sister Miss Clyde Sprouse and five brothers Lewis Ralph Grady Ira and others. The family has the communitys sympathy.

Abbeville County reports raising 5309.19 for the Red Cross drive ending Monday at six pm. About two thousand county residents contributed, with cash 2691.19 and pledges 2618, and thanks are given to workers across every community for their efforts.

Death of Captain Austen Sunday

Captain W. H. Austen died in his room last Sunday afternoon June 24 1917 after a long illness. He came to Abbeville years ago with Seaboard road and befriended locals, aiding community life. Ill health led to care by the local Masons who provided comfort, and he was buried Monday morning with Masonic honors. He had no relatives in the county.

Women to Register as Food Administration Members

Miss Ruth McLane and Miss Margie Bradley traveled to Due West to attend the Young Peoples Christian Union session.
