Joseph J Darlington L L D leading attorney of Washington DC and Abbeville County native died at home Thursday June 24 1920 after a long illness Cancer of the stomach was diagnosed months earlier He was born in 1849 in Abbeville later moved to Due West Erskine College graduate and longtime trustee He aided Erskine with gifts and was honored with a Doctor of Laws degree Survived by two daughters He was a renowned lawyer and a devoted friend of Due West and Erskine College
State health officer Dr James A Hayne returned to Columbia after aiding in baby testing at Abbeville mill village. He and Dr E W Carpenter of Greenville examined tonsils and eyes finding fewer diseased tonsils than usually seen among nearby children.
Assistant attorney general Howard Figg says the 14000 tons permitted by Argentina were purchased under Justice Department direction with State Department support. An American trading company bought the sugar and will distribute it under government authority to essential industries and households after export permits were secured.
Arrangements are completed to offer an excellent French course at the city high school next session. Mr A J Derbyshire rector of Trinity Episcopal church will teach the classes bringing years of experience from St Johns School New York City. Each year of French adds one unit to graduate credits.
Mrs. G. A. Neuffer and Mrs. W. D. Barksdale hosted a hospital shower on Main Street for the hospital. Guests enjoyed cream and cake and received many useful gifts. Mrs. W. L. Peebles also hosted a Thursday shower to aid the hospital with generous gifts.
A noon meeting of Farmers Bank directors approved a four percent semiannual dividend. Dr. F. E. Harmison reported the bank’s affairs and five thousand dollars was added to the surplus fund.
A meeting of Abbeville school district citizens will be held in the courthouse at 7 o'clock Tuesday evening June 29 to elect three trustees for the city schools. Terms expiring include J. S. Morse W. P. Greene and R. S. Link. A casual canvass on the square this morning suggested possible variations.
Mrs. T Dowthart hosted two music recitals at her home on Tuesday. Parents and friends of the pupils attended as guests. The pupils performed well and visitors listened with interest. The class will rest during the hot summer months.
Dr Moffatt president of Erskine College preaches at Abbeville Presbyterian Church and Mrs B S Barnwell heads to Williamston with Miss Mary Aiken to settle the Barnwell home. Mr W M Barnwell also travels with them as little Miss Julia Cock accompanies for the trip.
Athens lawyer Thomas J. Shackleford urged at the South Carolina Bankers convention that the New York cotton exchange depresses prices and harms southern growers. He argued for creating a southern cotton center and severing ties with New York, noting long travel and declines in spot cotton since 1885.
Charles F. Murphy leader of Tammany Hall arrives in San Francisco with Governor Alfred Smith and says he has been out of touch with politics. He foresees a caucus to decide the New York delegation stance on the Volstead act amendment and platform. He comments on a $125,000 Hartog matter as a business suit. Smith notes caucus to set positions before convention.
Freak Evans visits his parents Mr. and Mrs. George White in Spartanburg for a usual summer visit. Her presence delights a wide circle of friends and local acquaintances.
A congregational meeting has been called by the Session of the Presbyterian Church to be held at the time of the usual morning service on Sunday July 4 1920.
An elderly solicitor learns Rosenberg Mercantile Co. secretly bought moth preventative samples after the man visited the Main street, Trinity street, and dry goods entrances. The buyer, Mr. Sol Rosenberg, finally orders the product, noting the seller’s persistence and the effectiveness of the preparation.
The Book Club met Wednesday afternoon at Mrs. L. W. White’s home with large attendance. Guests included Mrs. Frank Evana of Spartanburg and Miss Kittie Perrin of Greenville. Miss Mamie Hill was elected president, with Mrs. John Harris secretary and Mrs. J. D. Fulp as new member. cake and cream were served.
Mr and Mrs T G White with Miss Kittie Perrin and Miss Jeansie White traveled to Greenville to sell the season s first peaches at seventy five cents per peck. Mr White will oversee home building as others visit friends and members of the Monroe Burriss Calohun Corporation family bring the fruit to town.
Mrs C S Todd returning to Columbia after visiting her parents Mr and Mrs Foster McLane attended a party Friday afternoon in Due West hosted by Mrs James Kennedy in her honor.
The San Francisco report says Democratic forces mobilize over the prohibition plank as William J. Bryan arrives to lead the bone dry faction. He supports rigid enforcement of the Volstead act while other leaders push for modification, with Senator Glass and President Wilson’s league views adding to the clash.
Mrs L W White and Miss Mary Milford depart Monday for Hendersonville to spend the summer.
