Repeal of War Time Prohibition Appears Lost in Senate Vote
Washington June 21 a decisive senate vote 55 to 11 defeated an effort to exempt beer and wine from the war time prohibition law. The body tabled Senator Phelan's rider to the agricultural appropriation bill seeking application of the law to distilled spirits alone. The vote signals the death knell for measures to permit beer and wine under war time prohibitions. In the house a new tactic emerged with Gardners amendment to suspend war time ban on beer and wines under prohibition enforcement legislation facing likely rejection. The committee also backed enforcement by the internal revenue service rather than a special prohibition commissioner. Senate action followed brief debate led by Phelan with Gronna moving to table the rider.
