Washington June 22 The Supreme Court sustained Intermountain rate orders as valid and upheld the long and short haul clause of the Interstate Commerce Act. It affirmed zone based rates, rejected blanket or blanket profits challenges, and held the commission could fix regionally differentiated rates while maintaining reasonableness and non discrimination across routes. Chief Justice White delivered the unanimous ruling, preserving the commission’s power to regulate rates and apply the long and short haul principle.

Webb Bill Seeks Pretrial Indictment Access for Defendants
Washington June 22 Representative Webb of North Carolina introduced a bill to require that persons indicted or informed against for crimes and misdemeanors other than capital offenses receive copies of the indictment or information before arraignment or pleading. The measure also would provide names and addresses of witnesses to be supplied at least one day before trial. Webb, who heads the judiciary committee, aims to liberalize star chamber style prosecutions.
