Columbia correspondent reports R C Hamer president outlines a cooperative marketing plan to reform cotton selling. Proposals include grading weighing warehousing pooled selling direct marketing cost of production surveys and uniform varieties to stabilize prices and raise producer earnings. Membership requires 400000 bales and a five year marketing contract.

Big Packard Truck Crashes Into Embankment Near Abbeville

A county Packard truck on the Due West road two and a half miles from Abbeville ran off course Friday morning. No one was injured and damage was minimal. the vehicle was embedded in an embankment and later dug out and towed to the gang camp for repairs.

Mistrial Ordered In Lanford Case In Spartanburg

In Spartanburg on June 19 a mistrial was ordered in the Lanford murder case after juror illness halted testimony. The court recessed to complete evidence, bail was set at 20000 dollars, and Judge Sease noted the case as potentially bail eligible but stressed not deciding guilt. Defense said a two juror requirement could not be waived.

Miss Best to Sail for Japan Mission Work

Miss Louise Best daughter of Rev J H Best of Cokesbury has completed Metho dist conference training and will speak at Gilgal church next Sunday about her planned work in Japan. She sails from New York July 18 and will begin duties as a missionary under the Methodist Episcopal church South. The Rev Mr Best, her father, pastors the Cokesbury district and Miss Best will occupy the pulpit next Sunday.

Parole Granted For Two Abbeville Inmates

The clerk of court announces parole for Bush Williams and Jim DuBose. Williams, convicted of murder in February term, is parole until August 15 while the pardon board considers full pardon. he is said to have bone tuberculosis preventing gang labor. DuBose, convicted in 1912 of murder, is paroleable during good behavior.

Mob captures Black man after fatal assault near Plum Branch

Herbert Quarles, a Black man, was hunted by a large posse across multiple counties after allegedly choking a white woman near Plum Branch. About 5,000 rounds were fired as he was captured, chained to a tree, and reportedly killed by the mob despite officers’ attempts to protect him. The incident follows a past conviction and marks a brutal, racially charged vigilante action in McCormick County.

New Prohibition Enforcement Scheme Proposed in States

Washington reports a plan to create a separate prohibition enforcement unit in each state headed by a state director. The overhaul, presented to Senator Penrose and Senator Watson, would abolish current multi state districts, centralize control, save about 150000 dollars, and introduce a mobile force under Director Haynes. The plan depends on Treasury control of prohibition jurisdiction.

Abbeville County Highway Commission will open bids on July 7 for a 16.5 mile paving project along the Antreville road between Abbeville and the Anderson County line. The heavily traveled route is expected to benefit residents along the corridor.

Food price declines across retail and wholesale markets in May

Washington reports May 1921 price drops with retail food costs down 4.8 percent from April and wholesale prices down about 2 percent. From May 1919 peaks, retail foods have fallen 83 percent and wholesale prices about 44.5 percent. Butter, cheese and sugar led declines while onions, cabbages and oranges rose. Regional changes show Milwaukee and St. Paul down 8 percent, Jacksonville and Savannah about 4 percent, Atlanta and Charleston 4 percent, Richmond 3 percent.

Two Homes Burn Near Railroad Shops

Fire Sunday morning destroyed two small frame houses tied to the Wade Cochran estate near the railroad shops. Occupied by Black families, they lost all household effects. One house was a total loss when firefighters arrived. the second could have survived if not for low water pressure likely from distance to the pumping station or a small main.
