OnD Issue Before Council Over Bid Error and Bonds

Georgia Trust Company appeared at a special city council meeting to admit a bid error on five percent bonds for street improvements. W W Wardlaw of the Georgia Trust Co urged accepting his bid at 5 percent, with funds deposited to cover actual needs. Council debated terms and authorized light department reports and bond payments while considering pool room petitions and license safeguards.

Jones Wins in County Treasurer Primary Runoff

In the final primary J. E. Jones defeated George C. Douglass by a 308 vote margin. The tally was Jones 685 and Douglass 882, with total 1067 votes in the runoff. Douglass gained 111 votes from May and Jones increased by 255 votes.

Gary Takes Over Presiding Duties in Laurens County Court

Frank B. Gary left Monday to preside at the June term of the Court of Common Pleas replacing Judge Prince who is ill at a Baltimore hospital. Gary will also preside in the Laurens County court.

R W Cothran Dies in Greenwood

R W Cothran died suddenly Monday morning at his Greenwood home after a period of poor health. He leaves wife Miss Jennie Harrison sister of Dr F E Harrison of Abbeville. three sons Wade William and Francis. two daughters Mary and Annie. Funeral held this afternoon with Dr Harrison and W S Cothran and Miss Margaret Cothran of Abbeville attending.

Homecoming for Miss Jessie Hill from Denver

Miss Jessie Hill returns to Abbeville after a year in Denver Colorado with her sisters Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Baldwin. She reports good health and a warm welcome from friends after visiting major western sights and meeting notable people. Albert Wibert attended the Carolina Military Academy class of 1879 reunion in Columbia with six surviving members.

New Seagrave Fire Engine Clears Second Test

The new Seagrave fire engine passed a second test Friday morning after a three and a half hour run of tests with no trouble. It was accepted by Mr. Shannon of the Southeastern Fire Insurance Underwriters. A previous test about ten days earlier failed due to a hot bearing in the centrifugal pump before a new pump from Columbus, Ohio arrived.

Body of Mark Smith Identified in Murder Case

The corpse of Mark Smith was recovered at Cherokee Shoals from the Savannah River and positively identified by his wife and mother. Investigators search the river for clues after a brutal mutilation. the coroner's inquest continues with a possible reward for the four white men.

Cadet Frank Gary Jr Embarks on First Cruise at Annapolis

Frank B Gary Jr completes his first year at Annapolis and passes exams with a creditable ranking. He serves aboard the U S Wisconsin and will train cadets in the West Indies Panama Canal and through the canal. After three months at sea the crew returns to New York and Boston for a brief leave. British Officers Complete First Nonstop Atlantic Flight

Capt. John Alcock and Lieut. Arthur W. Brown landed at Clifden Ireland after a 1612 minute nonstop 1900 mile crossing from Newfoundland to Ireland. They faced fog high winds and rough seas with the Vickers Vimy in a harrowing climb and dive before a safe touchdown and wireless contact.

One Year Agricultural Men Complete Their Course

Ten young men at Clemson College completed a one year course in practical agriculture and received certificates at closing exercises. The class was smaller due to war conditions, with next session expected to return to normal size. Upshaw Attacks Gompers Over Wet Rally At Capitol

Washington report says Representative William D. Upshaw denounced the AFL protest on Capitol grounds demanding wartime prohibition repeal. He questioned the telegram supposedly from Gompers and noted the signature came from Atlanta pastor John W Ham, casting doubt on the labor leadership.

Citizens Press for Maximum Street Paving in Abbeville

Mayor Mars spearheads petitions urging property owners in Abbeville to sign for extensive street paving. Two thirds of owners on Trinity Chestnut Greenville Washington South Main Pickens North Main have signed, with only a few refusals. The plan promises twice the paving amount compared to the original 90 000 dollars.

H G Smith Dies on Last Fray in Abbeville

Henry Gillespie Smith 39 died Friday night at Johns Hopkins Hospital Baltimore after months of illness. He was buried in Long Cane cemetery Abbeville after a Monday funeral at his home.
