U S May Strike Huns From East

Governor Manning told the South Carolina Council of Defense in Columbia that the United States may need a large army in Russia and that agricultural exemptions will have to be waived. He returned from Washington with a note of urgency and urged war footing without delay.

Huckleberries from Little Mountain arrive every few days selling two quarts for a quarter. War disruptions raise prices as bushes struggle to bear fruit. Paris reports a morning German assault west of Montdidier and Noyon with French forces resisting in a protected zone. In other sectors the French claim gains between the Aisne and Marne, taking two woods and 200 prisoners after driving back German penetrations. a German attack near Rheims failed.

The Church Society Holds Summer Meeting at Greene Home

The Ladies Society of the Associ ate Reformed Presbyterian church met at Mrs. W. P. Greene's home Thursday afternoon. With little church work in summer, the gathering featured a musical program and social only. Performers included Miss Ruth McLane, Mrs. S. M. Pleasant supper honors Sunday school contest winners

A Friday night event at the mill hosted by Sunday school classes celebrated the red and blue membership contest. Over 200 attendees dined outdoors in the tennis court, with flowers decor, music from a Victrola and a new band, and speeches by Hon. George C. Hodge, Jof Greenwood, and Rev. M. R. Plaxco. The ladies society of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian church served the three course meal.

Lieut Roddy Devlin Returns from Training in Abbeville

Lieut Roddy Devlin visited Abbeville with his sister Mrs M R Plaxco before being stationed at Camp Wadsworth. He completed a machine gun course at Fort Sill and hopes to reduce German numbers in the Crown Prince’s army during his next assignment.

Henryetta Oklahoma June 7 fear of uprising among Indians and mixed bloods in Old Hickory stamping grounds dissipated as Henrietta company of home guards under Captain Kiersting returned with word that malcontents would disperse and not cause trouble. Discontent stemmed from draft, card system wheat flour purchases, and support for war causes amid Crazy Snake rebellion history.

Learning to be Soldiers at Plattsburg from Clemson cadets

Nailing In The Kaiser A Red Cross Nail Drive Article

About 575 nails were driven in the Kaiser's coffin with contributions ranging from 10 cents to one dollar. Lawyer D H Hill drove the first nail. Young helpers, including little boys, earned a nail each and refused ice cream for patriotism. Quilla Wardlaw rallied 15 to 20 friends who paid nickels dimes and quarters and drove more nails. John T Cheatham sent a Busy Bee Squad basket of peaches. The Busy Bees earned 101 67 for the drive as night fell on a productive day supporting U S A soldiers.

Marines' Success Spurs airmen to set record

In Miami on June 7 Lieutenant L Lisleer piloted 109 consecutive loops at the marine flying field, surpassing the record for military aviators. Reports from South Carolina boards show 137 men aged 21 since June 5, 1917 registered Wednesday, with 4,835 white, 4,780 negroes, and 22 aliens. two boards pending bring total near 10,000. Submarine Sinks American Vessel Pinar Del Rio Off Maryland

The American steamer Pinar Del Rio, a 2504 gross ton freighter built in 1895 and under American control, was sunk by a German submarine miles off Maryland coast yesterday morning. One crew member is missing, sixteen landed on the Virginia coast, and hope remains the missing man will be found or picked up. The raid follows the sinking of the Vinland off the Cape last Wednesday.

Abbeville Schools Close After Pleasant Year

Abbeville and Abbeville-Graded schools closed Friday after a successful and pleasant year. Teachers praised for care and diligence. students happy with the year. Next year’s staff includes Prof McTyre Dannehy and Miss Lynch Wood Magill at the high school. Graded school assignments list several teachers for seventh to first grades and note two positions still to be filled.

Leslie McMillan Receives Commission and Leave Home

Lieut Leslie McMillan was home on short leave Saturday after being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He is assigned to Camp Sevier as an instructors in the Officers Training School. He studied at Camp Jackson where in a class of over two hundred men he had the highest marks save one, earning pride for his hometown.

Reverend F W Gregg Given L L D At Winthrop

The congregation at Upper Long Cane and Presbyterians in the city note that Rev F W Gregg was awarded the degree of L L D at Winthrop during last week’s closing exercises. Gregg served the Long Cane congregation about forty years ago and is of interest to local parishioners.
